We’ve been dead popular (if you’ll excuse the pun) these last couple of days. The latest piece is Dani’s article on the crowdfunding efforts of the Gaelic community in Glasgow to raise £3000 to re-erect Jessie Maclachlan’s stone – a magnificent Celtic cross in a very prominent position in the Cemetery.
Jessie gets called ‘ the Queen of Gaelic Song’ She sang in the first MOD and recorded Gaelic’s first gramaphone record. She played some pretty big gigs in New York, Amsterdam, places like that. She was by all accounts a very.big.deal.
The crowd funding page has a lot more detail on her life. It would be great to see this one re-uplifted. Its in such a great spot. And we don’t have many female stories in the Cemetery. Well, no, that’s a lie. You’ve got imagine at least some of the 15,000 people buried in the Cemetery are women – it’s just we haven’t heard their voices yet. I wonder what other remarkable women we have hidden there?
